Ronald Carr was a brewery worker in civilian life, he had joined the RAF in July 1941 soon after his nineteenth birthday. He was posted to 150 Squadron and completed a full tour of thirty operations on Wellingtons before going to 30 OTU at Seighford as an instructor. He joined GJA Smith's crew on 100 Squadron to replace Frank Diggle, the crews original rear gunner who had been lost flying with another crew. Flying in a new Lancaster ND595 V-Victor, the crew got shot down and had to bail out over Switzerland. After several months of internment the crew were repatriated in an exchange scheme. The full story of Carr's crash and repatriation is documented in Chapter 8 of Roger Anthoine's excellent book "Infringing Neutrality - The RAF in Switzerland 1940-45".
