83 Sqn was formed at the start of 1917 and was used in the First World War as a night bomber squadron before being disbanded in 1919. It reformed in 1936. It was in action on the first day of the war, looking for German shipping operating Hampdens. It was in a Hampden that Flight Sergeant John Hannah was awarded the Victoria Cross. I Dec 1941 the squadron started re-equipping with Manchesters, but soon moved on to Lancasters which it used for the rest of the war. Post warit flew Lincolns and became the first squadron to use the Vulcan (both Mk1 and Mk2). The squadron disbanded in 1969.
