The squadron was formed in July 1917 as a fighter squadron and used as London defence. It was disbanded after the First World War and was only reformed in 1937 as a bomber squadron. It flew Hampdens until mid-1941 before converting to Manchesters and then to Lancasters. Post war it flew Lincolns and Canberras before the squadron was disbanded in 1958.
