101 Sqn formed in July 1917 as a night bomber squadron and saw action in France. It disbanded at the end of 1919. I reformed in 1928 and at the start of the Second World War operated Blenheims. In 1941 it converted to Wellingtons and a year later to Lancasters. By 1943 the squadron was used to jam and distrupt German communications using ABC (Airborne Cigar). This, however, made the aircraft easier to find, and as a result, the squadron had the highest loss rate of any RAF squadron. After the Second World War the unit operated Lincolns, Canberras (becoming the first RAF jet bomber unit), Vulcans, VC10 and now Voyagers.
